The Rules of Progress

January 31, 2023

The Game (simplified):

Start: The first card is placed drawing-side-up on the table and each player guesses a year. The closest player goes last.

Turns: Each turn consists of a player guessing where the next card goes in the sequence on the table by placing their player card on the table in sequence. The player card should be placed between two cards or on one end of the row of cards.

After the player card is put down, each player going around the table can optionally challenge the player's guess by placing their own player card in a different place in the sequence of cards. Challenges start to the left of the player and go around the table clockwise.

Once all player cards are put down (if there are any challengers), the card is flipped over to reveal the date.

If the player guesses correctly they take back their player card and the game proceeds to the next player. If the player guesses incorrectly they lose one strike and flip over their player card. If their player card has previously been flipped, they are out.

If a challenger guesses correctly and the player does not, the challenger gets to skip their next turn (if they have not used a strike) or flip over their player card to reverse a previous strike.

If a challenger guesses incorrectly and the player guesses correctly, they lose one strike and flip over their player card. If the challenger's player card has previously been flipped, they are out. If a challenger guesses incorrectly and the player also guesses incorrectly, the challenger does not lose a strike or go out.

The winner is the last player left.
